Identity Thief – The previews do not look good, nor do the early reviews. Besides, Friends did this in a half-hour episode back in the 90’s that is probably a lot funnier and less time consuming.
Side Effects – The premise seems interesting, and is probably the best movie coming out this weekend. Soderbergh has some good movies under his belt, and an article linked below highlights his confidence in casting Channing Tatum, who stars in this movie.
Valentine’s Day Releases – Since Valentine’s Day is National Get Out With Your Sweetie Day, movies are releasing before the next Film Reel Friday. Here are the new movies dropping before or on the 14th for your viewing enjoyment.
A Good Day to Die Hard – Die Hard 5 is out and is getting a good foot in the door with reviewers. If you and your significant other want to go see heart-pounding action and Bruce Willis, then you need to get married immediately if you are not already.
Beautiful Creatures – Ethan longs to escape his small Southern town. He meets a mysterious new girl, Lena. Together, they uncover dark secrets about their respective families, their history and their town. Yeah, I know, I copied and pasted straight form IMDb, but I couldn’t get a read if I would like this movie or not. Early reviews are so-so.
Safe Haven – Listen male reader, I am going to level with you. I read the Notebook, not just saw the movie. I read The Wedding, another Nichaolas Sparks book, and cried like a baby. I still have hair on my chest and some semblance of a muscular physique. Go see this movie with your wife or girlfriend and enjoy it. Don’t just go to see it so she will enjoy it and you can say she owes you, go and enjoy it and then blog about how much you liked it. This movie is probably OK, so it’s more tolerable than Identity Thief or Star Wars Episode I.
Escape From Planet Earth – OR, you could go see this animated movie. It depends if you want to laugh with your significant other or go see Safe Haven and increase your chances of being seen as sensitive and tender. Anyway, this is a good choice to take the kids to this weekend and get out of the house on this snowy weekend here in Wisconsin. Let me know how it is, the kids and I are going sledding.
Dian Taibi at Cinemagogue takes a look at the cultural fascination with zombies and digs deeper to see what movies like Night of the Living Dead, the Walking Dead, and Warm Bodies say about humanity and the mega-narrative. Here is Part 1 and Part 2 and more parts are forthcoming. I’ll post these next week. I’m interested to hear what you think about zombie movies and how they relate to the human condition and God’s story.
Speaking of Zombies, here are a couple review of Warm Bodies, the new Teen-Romance Zombie movie (never thought I would type that). James Harleman at Cinemagogue liked at after hating it, Matt Mueller at OnMilwaukee.com thinks the cast paces the film, and Marshall Fine at the Huffington Post echoes Harleman on the acting and likes the different take on the zombie genre.
Star Wars Has New Spinoff Films To Expand Star Wars Universe – This.Is.So.Cool! Disney making some quick work on making sure they take Star Wars junkies, such as myself, and gorging them on new offerings and films! My hope is that they can be well-written and not just be pumped out in order to appease fans and make money……OK so part of me doesn’t care about that! STAR WARS!!!
Solo Film As First Standalone Star Wars? – Yes please. There is also possibility of a Boba Fett stand alone. Why not both? In the Expanded Universe, the paths of Solo and Fett cross often before and after the original trilogy. Yes, I know Fett died in Return of the Jedi, but her really didn’t. I can lend you a good book that explains the whole deal. Anywho, enough about my nerdiness, please read on and get excited!
Avengers to Present at 2013 Oscars – Don’t get overly excited. Black Widow and Thor won’t be there, but everyone else will. Hopefully they’ll show up in full costume, but we’ll see. I’m hoping for a CGI Hulk, Captain America, Nick Fury, a battle ready Iron Man, and bow wielding Hawkeye to get up there.
Skyfall Passes the Dark Knight Rises at the Worldwide Box Office – Completely surprised by this. Not only is Dark Knight Rises a better movie than Skyfall, but it seemed to be massively more popular. It must be those crazy Russians and they’re love of the anti-Russian spy, Bond.
The Wrecking Crew Documentary – This is a super cool look at the studio crew responsible for some of the greatest albums of all-time. “From ‘Be My Baby’ to ‘California Girls;’ ‘Strangers in the Night’ to ‘Mrs. Robinson;’ ‘You’ve Lost that Lovin’ Feelin” to ‘Up, Up and Away;’ and from ‘Viva Las Vegas’ to ‘Mr. Tambourine Man,’ the group dubbed The Wrecking Crew played on all of them. Six years in a row in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the Grammy for ‘Record of the Year’ went to Wrecking Crew member recordings.” Check it out to give it a view.
So It Turns Out Channing Tatum Is A Pretty Good Actor – An interesting look at Steven Sodergbergh and his confidence in Channing Tatum and his growing diversity as an actor. Cannot recommend you see Magic Mike, but I would be interested to see 21 Jump Street.
Could Star Wars Be About the Early Church? – And let’s end with something funny. Jon Acuff at Stuff Christians Like always has funny stuff, and this guest post from Aaron Summers takes trying to see something that is not there to new levels.
